Welcome to the class blog

Good morning, fellow musickers!

This is our class blog, in which all of us will have the opportunity to share ideas, links, videos, questions, answers, comments, etc., with each other.

I will often post homework assignments here.

For now, add a comment with an introduction of yourself.  Include:

  • Where you are from.
  • What year you are in at DePauw.
  • Your major, declared or intended (or if you are still exploring, tell us that).
  • Your musical background, both as a music maker and as a listener.
  • What you want to get out of this course.

I am a first year student as well and i have not yet declared my major. But if you were to ask me, I will most likely choose Biology. Even though my major is shifting towards science, but my i have a big interest in music. Music is my hobby; I can sing and play the drum, as well as guitar. From this class, i hope i can use the materials we learned in class to improve my understanding of music.

  3. My name is Hayley Ryan and I'm from a northern Chicago suburb called Glencoe. I'm a senior Psychology major and love listening to all kinds of music but I have never played a musical instrument. 4. Hey everyone,
My name is Logan Cash and I am from Frankfort, Kentucky. I am a junior and am a Kinesiology major. I enjoy listening to all types of music except for heavy metal. It's just too intense. If it has a good beat and is catchy I'll like it. I secretly like orchestra and symphony music. greatest pandora station to study to: film scores. I used to play piano, but just never picked it back up. I am taking folk guitar this semester. My hope for this class is just to make me appreciate music more and be able to look at music in a different perspective once this class is over. I also hope it can get me over the obstacle of reading music and playing an instrument.

  5. My name is Tori Lividini. I am from Avon, Indiana which is almost Indianapolis anyways. I am a freshman here. I have yet to declare a major but I plan on going for Psychology. I have participated in choir for 6 years before I came to DePauw University. I also have taken the Music Appreciation class which gave me a good insight into rhythm and some instruments. I want to take this class to further learn about the music that I have grown a large passion for since the beginning of my education here, specifically the orchestra and symphony pieces that have more depth to it than almost all of the modern pop music we see today.

  6. I'm from Plano, Texas. I'm a senior French Major. I know music but not music theory...From reviewing the chapters, I know most of the information in 1 & 2. I've played Piano, Harp and I was in DePauwCappella but changed to singing in Barbara Pare's Studio. I went to highschool at Plano Senior High, a school that has been awarded two grammys for their music program in which I participated in the orchestra and choir. My Senior Year both women's chorus and full orchestra was awarded to sing at theTexasMEA. I was the no child left behind in this orchestra, haha, my knowledge of music was incomparable to the other instrumentalists and choir did not teach theory. My boyfriend studies Jazz at the University of North Texas, so along with wanting to know more about music for myself, I want to be able to understand what he talks about when he dissects music that he hears and actively engage in the analysis as well.

  7. Hi!

My name is Angie Cotherman. I am from Lake Forest, Illinois which is a northern suburb of Chicago. I am a Sophomore, here at DePauw. My declared major is Communication, which I have never regretted. I love listening to music and attending musicals. I think everyone has their own and unique connection to music. I played the trumpet in 7th grade, which only lasted for a year. I was also in my school choir for a little bit of time, because I enjoyed singing so much. However, I stopped singing because I was not able to read music, which was a problem. So, I have now finally come back to it and have decided to take this class because I want to learn how to read music. I am able to hear the sounds of pitch, however cannot read it on a piece of paper. This is what I hope to get out of the class the most, but also to improve my knowledge about the different types of music and instruments in the industry.

  9. Hello my fellow classmates,

My name is Hunter Mitchell, and I'm all the way from Greencastle, Indiana. I am a first year student, and although I have not declared my major I plan to major in Biology with intentions of attending the School of Optometry at Indiana University. My whole life I have been surrounded by music, and it has become a huge part of my life. I play guitar, and I write songs to express my feelings and inspire others. From this course I hope to learn a little bit on how to read music, and maybe a little bit of music's history.

  10. Hello!

My name is Joe Littiken. I'm originally from northwest Indiana, but moved to where I currently live, in Quincy, Indiana, a few years ago. I am a senior at Cloverdale High School and have been studying at DePauw through the Alpha program since last semester. I hope to study electrical/computer engineering at either Rose-Hulman or Purdue. Music has been a big part of my life these past few years. I've played the bass in most of the different school bands at Cloverdale since I've started high school. Also, I recorded an album with a Latin jazz band that was based out of Greencastle. As far as listening to music goes, my favorite genres would have to be indie, jazz, and classical, but I enjoy listening to anything! From this course, I would like to further enhance my understanding of music so I can become a better musician!

  11. I'm enjoying reading your introductions very much. I hope you don't mind, but I read a number of them to my mother, who was a college music professor for many years, and now has advanced Alzheimer's Disease. I was visiting her and after I read her a story, I read her your introductions from my iPhone, and she smiled quite a bit.

So many musical interests and such a wide variety of backgrounds--very exciting. I'll work to include as much as I can beyond the material this course typically covers (which is what is in the Balensuela text and the bullet points in the syllabus).

The more specific you can be, the better. For example, is there something you can't do now that you want to be able to do? When Angie explained that not being able to read music kept her from singing certain types of music, that was helpful to me.

  12. Yo. The name's Sam Doku, you can call me which ever you prefer or feel more comfortable with. Accra's home for me. It's the capital of Ghana which is in West Africa. I am a junior econ major. When I was a kid I played the piano and was able to sight read music quite well but I stopped when I got to middle school. I took this class in the hopes that I could pick up these things again. Rap is my favorite genre but I am a pretty diverse listener.

  13. Hi! My name is Megan McGowan and I am from Edina, MN. I am a senior economics major with an education minor. I have a little bit of music background - my mom has had past positions singing at funerals, weddings, etc. and I have been in choir my whole life (but mostly just for fun). I do not play any musical instruments currently, but have dabbled in guitar and the piano. As a listener, I do not feel like I am very critical unless it's about being on key. I would like to learn how to be a more attentive and observant listener of classical musical and other styles.

  14. Hi, my name is Dante Yokley and I'm from St. Louis, Missouri. I'm a sophomore and I'm majoring in Computer Science. I'm going to keep this as short as possible: I come from a pretty big musical background. My Dad plays the organ and directs my church's choir, Mom sings, older brother plays the drums and attends Berklee College of Music, little brother plays bass guitar, older cousin is also a drummer(Check out his band, Zack Weber!), and my closest friends all play instruments. I played the saxophone is high school and haven't really played since. I'm taking this course to get back into music and to understand it as much as possible (to possibly start writing music).
